Hit the Road, Jack! My Road Trip Suggestions for Fall 2020
This year has changed almost everything in the travel industry, from how restaurants and hotels operate, to the way we move around. While flying itself has been deemed safe by the CDC, it is understandable that many of us are still wary of heading to the airports just yet.
One thing that 2020 hasn’t taken from our industry is the beauty and simplicity of a short road trip. While international flights and early morning airport cabs are exciting and glamorous, there is nothing like packing up the car, loading up on your favorite snacks, and driving in the direction of a new destination.
If the nostalgia and charm of a good old fashioned road trip are calling you and your cabin fever, I have the list of short and long road trips for you! Read on to see my suggestions and destinations for fall journeys starting from the major city hubs of Los Angeles, Phoenix, or St. Louis. (However, these destinations are accessible from many starting points nearby!)
Many of the properties on this list are Virtuoso affiliated, so I can get you VIP’d with extra amenities. I would be thrilled to help set up your road trip destination!
Los Angeles
Short Road Trips from Los Angeles
Santa Barbara is one of the most iconic cities in the state of California. With access to beaches, beautiful hiking, and wineries and restaurants with incredible views, this central California city is the perfect escape.
Just a short hour and a half drive from LA, get your car packed, and let me take care of your reservations. Two of my favorite properties in Santa Barbara are the beautiful Belmond El Encanto or the luxurious Rosewood Miramar Beach, both are Virtuoso affiliated, so I can get you VIP’d with extra amenities.
Longer Road Trips from Los Angeles
Looking to get a bit further away from home? Hop on the 10 and head east! Drive either six or eight hours to Phoenix or Sedona, respectively.
While a year-round destination, Fall and Spring are the optimal seasons to experience Arizona, as the temperatures cool down and outdoor activities abound. The only property on famous Camelback Mountain Sanctuary on Camelback Resort and Spa offers the feeling of being tucked away, yet only a short drive from Old Town Scottsdale’s restaurants and top-notch golf.
For a serene getaway, head north to the Enchantment Resort for a secluded experience in the beautiful Red Rocks of Sedona, Arizona. Enchantment boasts one of the best spas in the USA Mii Amo, as well as delicious on-site dining.
Phoenix
Short Road Trips from Phoenix
Looking to get out of town without leaving the state? Arizona has so much to offer, just two hours south will get you a completely new experience.
Miraval Arizona recently renovated its 400-acre property and spared no expense to curate a luxury wellness escape set in the desert. For a tried and true experience, the Ritz Carlton Dove Mountain consistently offers AAA Five Diamond service, golf and restaurant options on-site, and stunning mountain views. It’s a terrific destination for families and couples, and another Virtuoso affiliate.
Longer Road Trips from Phoenix
If you’re ready for a full change of scenery (and maybe a hint of a winter wonderland!) it is time to head north to Telluride, Colorado. This seven to eight-hour car ride will take you right through the Four Corners and into beautiful Colorado landscapes.
I’ll make your reservations at the Fairmont Franz Klammer Lodge or the Auberge Resort Madeline for convenient access to ski lifts, mountain views, and a luxury cabin experience.
St. Louis
Short Road Trips from St. Louis
Based in the Midwest, the destinations are truly endless for a road trip from St. Louis. Just a quick five-hour drive from St. Louis can bring you to Nashville, Tennessee to soak in a whole different culture, great music, and southern comfort cooking.
The Thompson Nashville brings the familiarity of Hyatt and an outdoor rooftop bar, so if you are not comfortable yet dining indoors this is a wonderful option without sacrificing a great experience! The Hutton Hotel in downtown Nashville captures the unique aspects of the city right in your room with an in-room record player and even the option to try out a Fender guitar.
Longer Road Trips from St. Louis
Drive a little farther from St. Louis for a beautiful and secluded resort experience at Blackberry Farms, a Relais & Châteaux resort tucked away in the beautiful landscape of Tennessee This property limits access to only registered guests, so you can be assured of a comfortable and private experience. For a more wellness and adventure oriented stay in the Great Smoky Mountians, but with the same level of luxury, head to the sister property Blackberry Mountain.
As a Virtuoso agent, my role is to ensure that even in these different times you are as comfortable as ever traveling. If any of these destinations intrigue you, please reach out at (link email here) so I can arrange the road trip of your dreams.
